A full north to south tour of the country is recommended for the first-time visitor. With a minimum of 15 days, an itinerary might include: Hanoi, the historic and present capital; Hue, the last imperial capital; Hoi An (near Da Nang), the ancient port of the Chams; Nha Trang, for its fine beaches; Mui Ne, a new beach resort; Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) and the Mekong Delta. With a minimum of 10 days, and concentrating on the north, an itinerary might include Hanoi, Hue, Da Nang and Hoi An; a trip to the south may include Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta, Mui Ne, Da Lat and Nha Trang. Transport could be a combination of plane, car, bus and train. It is best to fly from Hanoi to Hue, and from Da Nang to Nha Trang, making the rest of the journey by hired car (with a driver), by tour bus or train. Main roads, such as Highway 1, which links Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, are continually being improved, but still remain below Western motorway standards.
